Programs
While leprosy is decreasing globally, Vietnam continues to face a many new cases annually, even as overall prevalence decreases, with 73 new cases detected in 2020 according to the National Library of Medicine. Those successfully treated still need extended care due to lingering physical disabilities from the disease, and their children who do not suffer from leprosy require our support to be able to survive and succeed.
Where are our Funds Going?
In Vietnam, leprosy-affected individuals reside in villages or hospitals with their families while they receive treatment, which generally lasts up to 2 years. Alongside medication, local heath authorities offer a monthly financial allowance, but it falls short of covering their needs for the entire month. Consequently, many patients seek employment outside the village, causing prolonged absences and potential disruptions in accessing crucial treatments.
Due to ongoing funding challenges in these villages, Friends of the Lepers has offered financial support for:
- Monthly allowances, food, medications, and wheelchairs for individuals affected by leprosy
- Aid in securing employment, building homes, and ensuring a consistent water supply for those in leprosy villages
- Support for the education of children of the affected, covering costs for primary to university level education, including scholarships for tuition, books, and supples
